The pull down

  1. Once you’ve secured your arm drag you should have a tight, side on grip. The key points are that you have a tight grip around his waist, your hips lower than his, and your legs pinched together initially
  2. Put your left leg out straight behind your opponent and pull him towards it. Your right knee and head shoudl push against him to unbalance him further.
  3. It’s very important to stay bound during this takedown. If you start to fall to the floor without your opp, you’ll land on bottom. Also, make sure you have unbalanced him first. Short, choppy steps and feints work great here.

The front slam

  1. Same set up as the first takedown, only this time we employee a more explosive movement. As you complete the arm drag, you drop down to take a High Crotch grip.
  2. To perform a high crotch you wrap your arms around your opponents leg as high as you can (near his crotch, hence the name!). I find it’s most beneficial if you put the arm that’s in front of him deep behind his leg and catch the bicep of the arm behind him. This is the same grip we use with Lion Killer chokes.
  3. Keeping good posture – knees bend, back strong with lumbar curve, chest up, you explode your hips upward. This movement is the same as the drive phase of an Olympic Lift.
  4. When you’ve gotten your opponent off the ground (he doesn’t have to be very high up, just off the ground will do) tilt him forward. You do this by pushing him with your left hand and looking in the direction you want him to go.
