First ever match, Conor vs Rob (mpg, 3:03, 26.3MB)

You’ll note how fidgety both fighters are. This is normal when the four ounce gloves are used as getting hit hurts! Rob pulls his punches in the match and shortens the range of motion. It’s important that you train realistic range of motion punches, aiming to sting, not bruise/injure your opponent.

MMA as a whole does not change the game in technical terms, what it does is increase the urgency with which you must escape. For example, in a submission match, mount isn’t such a big deal. You can be mounted for 2-3 minutes before there’s a sub. 2-3 minutes getting hit is a long time, and chances are the match will be stopped sooner. The mechanics of the escape in terms of hip movements remain almost identical.

Dan vs Conor (mpg, 3:04, 26.4MB)

This is how I want MMA Sparring to be done! Both guys are moving around, trying things, keeping the intensity up but the contact safe. My only regret is I didn’t record this from the start!
