Following on from our single unerhook post, here’s some reliable takedowns from the single underhook/wrist control.
1. The Knee Tap
Here I have an underhook with my right arm on Rob, and am controlling his left wrist:
I step back and pull back with my left, forcing him to land heavy on his right foot.
With my left hand, I tap the outside of his right knee as I throw my right hand up and out, similar to a shot putt.
It’s important that I run in front of Rob, and not into his. Imagine his legs are on one track of some train tracks, and yours are on the other.
As Rob’s falling, I re-establish my underhook and take up knee ride
2. The sideways double leg
If you can’t move your opponent, or he’s too good at balancing himself, you may want to try the shoot to take him down. Again, I’ve an underhook and wrist control.
I step to Rob’s side, so that I’m at 90 degrees to his body. Remember, if it’s not a right angle, it’s a wrong angle.
From the side I drop straight down. Don’t bend over. You’ve no real power if you’re bent over at the waist. Drop Straight Down!
I catch Rob’s far knee at the side, pull in with my arms as I drive into his near knee with my shoulder. Think a rugby scrum for this.
If you get the takedown right, you’ve also pinned his legs to the ground, so passing should be easier. Here, Rob is facing towards the camera, so I go ‘behind’ him (i.e. to my right).
And now, in video…
