What are classes like? (2nd August 2008)

Monday & Wedneday classes start with a general warm up lasting about 5-10 minutes. This warm will consist of either basic movements, partner drills, or light rolling. The rolling is effort free and is akin to shadow boxing. You and your partner are moving about together, resistance free.

After the warm up, the topic will be introduced. If it’s a move (escape, guard pass, or submission), we’ll spend a few minutes going over the move before there’s any instruction. This is beneficial to you because you get an appreciation of the problem first hand. That way, when it comes to the technique (the solution) you’re more receptive.

Learning the basic movements of the technique takes about 10-15 minutes. You’ll be introduced to the gross movements, and finer points added in as you grasp them.

A drilling phase follows this, where your partner starts fighting back. As a partner, it’s your job here to improve your partners skills, so you’ll give him just enough hassle so they can pull off the technique a few times.

Once the drilling is done, sparring is introduced. In the sparring, you and your partner are not friends! (just kidding) This is where the competitive element of training comes in.

As we’re an MMA club, we’ll always endeavour to include some sparring in each of the three ranges, regardless of what the focus is for the class. If our class is ground based, 10 minutes will be devoted to clinch and another 10-15 on stand up. This helps integrate the three ranges a lot better.

If there’s a competition coming up, individual athletes will be tested using Ironman rounds, where they’re given a set objective and a new opponent is introduced every 30 seconds or so. This really helps develop skills when tired or under pressure.

Tuesday nights incorporate MMA Sparring, and is a fairly intense class. Anyone is welcome to participate in this class. There’s a heavy element of stand up striking trained each week in this class, along with further situational drills, most of which also involve striking work.

Thursday night is the Athlete’s class, where one of our top athletes will help out beginners and work on specific areas. It’s a great change to get extra sparring/drilling in on an area you personally feel could do with more work. This class varies it’s focus from week to week, and an often include several different aspects of MMA.

Saturday’s class is a relaxed version of the Monday/Wednesday class, it is the weekend after all.
